Paint & refinish
Colour match, blend, clear and cure. Paint has a minimum time that cannot be compressed, which is the single most common reason a delivery date moves in the last week rather than the first.
A paint code does not give you your colour. It gives you a formula, which the factory then applied in batches that drifted, onto a car that has since spent years in Wisconsin weather. Matching is therefore a measurement of your car, not a lookup.
This is why refinish work is quoted with blend time into adjacent panels. Blending is not padding on an estimate; it is how a new panel stops announcing itself in daylight.
Which paint system, booth and colour-measurement equipment a shop uses is exactly what a reader wants to know here, and this site does not say — because none of it was supplied to it. Ask, and ask to be shown the spray-out card for your colour; that is better evidence than a brand name on a website.
After you collect the car
- —
- Fresh paint keeps curing for a while after delivery. Treat it gently for the first stretch and ask how long for the products used.
- —
- Avoid automatic car washes with brushes for the period you are told, and avoid waxing until it is cured.
- —
- Look at it in daylight, not under shop lights, and look along the panel rather than at it.
- —
- Wisconsin road salt finds any seam that was opened and not resealed. The first winter is the honest test.
Why the colour on the car is not the colour in the book
| Cause | What it does | What is done about it |
|---|---|---|
| Factory variants | One code may have several factory variants | The variant is identified, not assumed |
| Fade and oxidation | Years of sun move the colour | The panel is measured as it is today |
| Metallic orientation | Flake lies differently when sprayed differently | Spray-out cards before the panel |
| Adjacent panels | A perfect match on one panel can still read as a repair | Blend into the neighbours |
| Clear coat | Gloss and texture have to match, not only hue | Matched to the surrounding finish |
| Cure | Fresh finish is soft for a period after it looks dry | Cure time, which cannot be shortened |
Including when it is the other driver’s insurer
Refinish disputes land disproportionately on not-at-fault claimants, who have less information and less leverage. The section covers the policy, so it covers them too.
This section applies to every insurer that issues or delivers in this state a motor vehicle insurance policy that covers repairs to a motor vehicle registered or principally garaged in this state.
Statutory passages on this page are quoted from the Wisconsin Statutes and were last checked in October 2026 against docs.legis.wisconsin.gov. Statutes are amended. This is general information about a public law, not legal advice, and it is not a statement about your particular claim. Read the section yourself, or ask a lawyer.
Questions about this work
Why are you painting a panel that was not damaged?
Because of how colour works rather than how billing works. A new panel finished only to its own edges will read as a different colour next to the old ones in daylight. The blend extends the new finish into the neighbouring panel so the transition falls where the eye cannot find it.
How long does paint actually need?
Longer than the spraying. Prep is the bulk of the labour, and after the last coat the finish keeps curing for a period that depends on the products and the booth. That period is why a delivery date moves in the final week rather than the first, and it is the one stage in a repair that genuinely cannot be compressed by trying harder.
Can you match a pearl or a tri-coat?
Those are the hardest, and they are matched with spray-out cards tested against your actual panel before anything is sprayed on the car. If somebody tells you a tri-coat is straightforward, ask to see the card.
The other sections
| No. | Section | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| 101 | Collision repair | The ordinary case: something hit the car, or the car hit something, and panels, lights and the structure behind them have to come back to specification. |
| 102 | Structural & frame | When the hit reached past the panels. Straight is a measurement against the manufacturer's specification, in millimetres, not a judgement made by eye. |
| 104 | Sensors & calibration | The cameras and radar that run automatic braking and lane keeping sit behind the panels that get hit. A panel replaced without recalibration leaves a system aimed somewhere it is not. |
| 105 | Dents, trim & interior | The smaller end of 811121: paintless dent repair where the paint survived, bumper and trim work, and interior repair after a break-in or a deployment. |
