No. 5
Rock County, and the towns around it
A collision is a local problem whether you want it to be or not. The car has to get there, you have to get home, and somebody has to collect it again.
Towns served from Janesville:
Janesville · Beloit · Milton · Edgerton · Evansville · Clinton · Footville · Orfordville · Whitewater · Delavan · Elkhorn · Fort Atkinson
If your town is not on that list and you are in southern Wisconsin or just over the Illinois line, telephone anyway. The list is the ordinary range, not a boundary.
What distance actually costs
The mileage is not really the issue; the rental allowance is. Rental coverage has a daily cap and a total cap, and a repair far from home spends more of both: on the journey out, on the journey back, and on whatever second trip is needed when something is not right at collection.
That is also the quiet cost of accepting a shop in another city because it was the one named to you. It can be the right choice. It should be a choice.
Wisconsin, specifically
- —
- Deer. Rock County has a lot of rural edge, and an animal strike is usually a comprehensive claim rather than a collision claim — which often means a different deductible. Worth checking before you report it.
- —
- Hail. Often entirely paintless dent repair if the paint is unbroken, and often its own kind of claim. Section 105.
- —
- Road salt. Any seam opened in a repair and not properly resealed will tell you about it within a few winters. This is why corrosion protection is a line on a real estimate.
- —
- The first freeze. Volume rises sharply, and so does parts lead time. A January repair is not a July repair.
Where the shop is
An address you can drive to and a telephone answered by somebody who can explain your estimate. For a local service business, that is most of what proof actually consists of.

Getting the car here
- —
- If it is drivable, drive it — but not if any lamp, mirror, wiper or airbag warning is affected.
- —
- If it is not, ask the insurer where it is being towed before it goes, and what the daily storage is.
- —
- Take your documents, valuables and any transponder out before it leaves you.
- —
- Telephone during working hours to arrange the drop. This site does not claim an after-hours key drop, because it was not told there is one.
The nearest shop is not the required shop
Choosing locally is usually sensible. Being told you must is a different thing, and Wisconsin settled it in 2015.
For purposes of this section, a consumer has the right to select the motor vehicle repair facility of his or her choice.
Statutory passages on this page are quoted from the Wisconsin Statutes and were last checked in October 2026 against docs.legis.wisconsin.gov. Statutes are amended. This is general information about a public law, not legal advice, and it is not a statement about your particular claim. Read the section yourself, or ask a lawyer.
Tell us where the car is now
Including if it is already sitting in somebody else’s yard accruing storage. That is a solvable problem and it is better solved on day two than day nine.
